Evolution, human nature, and social change

Is there an inh erent, genetic human nature or are people simple what
our environment makes us? Is the view that our nature has a genetic
component inherently racist or sexist? A contentious debate has
arisen around the rapid expansion of a new disciple, evolutionary
psychology, that purports to trace many features of human behavior,
such as aggression, cooperation, hierarchy, and differences in
sexual behavior between men and women, to genetic sources shaped by
evolution. Presenter Andrew Hoerner will explore some of the
concepts of evolutionary psychology, asking what view progressives
should take toward them. He will argue that there is a tension
within progressive thought, and that evolutionary thinking can serve
either progress or reaction. Discussion to follow.

The group will be meeting at 100 Pine Street in downtown
San Francisco (wait outside and Pepper will let you
in). To get there by public transportation, get off at the
Embarcadero BART station, locate Pine Street and walk
to 100 Pine.

There will be childcare at this meeting, so feel free
to bring children. However, if you can, let us know
in advance so we can plan adequately.

not weeding gardens or painting walls (whew!), we're talking,
socializing and connecting while we make the everyday decisions that
make event s, meetings, socials and such.
So please feel free to come on out. Love + Politics is what we make
it. This month we are meeting at Andrew's house in Piedmont. It is
not wheelchair accessible . Please let us know if childcare will be
needed. For more info or directions write Sally at

Main Meeting & Potluck
Saturday 2/26, 6-9pm

A Vision for the Future of Poly Activism and Organizing in the Bay
Area

Join us for a discussion on how nuts and bolts poly activism and
organizing can transform the legal and social reality that
polyamorous people currently deal with on a daily basis.
Thomas Leavitt, a Santa Cruz area activist, will discuss the
pra ctical details of how polyamory activists can organize
themselves, build alliances with other groups, and begin to build
the organizational, legal and political framework that will enable
legal recognition of and protection for the exercise of polyamorous
relationships and families.

Thomas Leavitt has been tilting at political windmills since his
mother first dragged him to a school board meeting in elementary
school. He currently serves as co-chair of the GLBT Alliance
(http://www.homosexualagenda.org ), and was recently appointed
National Lavender Greens Caucus representative to the party's
presidential Nominating Process Working Group.
The potluck begins at 6:00, and the meeting will start promptly at
7:00 and continue until 9:30.
The location will be in San Francisco at 2139 O'farrell, just 1

Wendy-O Matik Presenting Saturday
Main Love+Politics Meeting and Potluck

We are committed to providing childcare at the
main meetings. If you would like to come to this meeting
and wish to bring a child or children, please let us know
immediately so we can arrange care. Call Pepper at
415 305 8766 or email him at inki@atg.com.

The next full Love & Politics potluck will be
Saturday, August 28. The potluck begins at 6:00, and
the meeting will start promptly at 7:00 and continue
until 9:30. Wendy-O Matik, author of Redefining Our
Relationships: Guidelines for Responsible Open
Relationships, will be making a presentation and leading
a guided discussion. Her workshop will focus on the
ways in which all of us, straight or queer, can have
relationships which are revolutionary. Her description
follows:

Loving openly and freely in this day and age, whether
you're straight or queer, is a political act. We are
conditioned by out-moded social norms that limit our
perceptions and shackle us to unhealthy cycles of
dissatisfying relationships. Yet we live in a time where we
can choose our own gender or redefine our own sexual
identity. Isn't it safe to assume that we also have a right
to decide what kind of relationship is more suitable to our
lifestyle? Declare yourself a revolutionary activist of the
heart. Find out how you can expand your potential to love,
radicalize your lifestyle, and together we can threaten the
social fabric of patriarchy!

The location will be in the San Francisco Kaiser Permanente
building, at 2139 O'Farrell, just 1 block from the intersection of
Geary & Divisidaro. We will have someone wait outside the building
before the meeting starts, since it can be hard to see from the
street. The 38 Geary bus (which picks up near
downtown SF BART) drops off on Geary about a block
away. Parking is free in the evening in the Garage
across the street.

Pepper will be picking people up from the Civic Center BART
at 5:30. If you wish to get a ride with him, contact him at
415 305 8766. Justin will be driving from the east bay. If you
want to carpool with him, please give him a call at 510 220 4379.

New Love+Politics Intentional Communities Action Group
Monday, August 16th, 7:30 to 9:30 pm

Many of us dream of living in communities that support our activism and our diverse ways of loving. Are you interested in forming progressive residential communities, ranging from communes to condos, from group houses to co-housing to co-op apartment buildings? Such intentional communities have traditionally been centers for activism, community-building, and personal support.

If you are interested in taking steps to create such communities, come join us for an evening of discussion, August 16th, at 7:30. The meeting will be at 27 Portsmouth Ave. in Piedmont. If interested, please contact Andrew at polyprogressive@livejournal.com. If we get a request at least a week in advance, we can arrange for child care.

Love+Politics intentional community meeting follow-up
For those of you in the San Francisco Bay Area:

Last night’s Love+Politics presentation by lawyer Jessie Palmer on legal formats for community housing was a big success. We had a large and enthusiastic turnout, and we learned a lot. We also ended the evening with a list of 14 people who are _currently_ interested in exploring the possibility of creating communities of progressive polys, queers, and friends, through mechanisms such as co-housing or limited equity housing cooperatives.

If anyone reading this is also interested in this possibility interested enough to come to a couple of meetings, meet some other good folks, and maybe put some work into making it happen please write to polyprogressive@livejournal.com

Theory Roundtable Film Screening and Discussion

On Saturday, July 10th at 2:30 pm, the Theory Roundtable will be presenting a documentary produced by one of our own, Karen Everett. The group will be meeting at her house in San Francisco (NOT the usual downtown location) for a screening and discussion. About the film:

"My Femme Divine" is an hour long personal documentary which reveals the contemporary world of butch and femme lesbians through the eyes of a woman mining her own explosive love affair. This universal tale of falling in love explores gender fluidity, sexual power play and Jungian notions of projection and yin/yang chemistry. Made primarily for a lesbian audience, the film also gives straight folks insight into lesbian culture, as well as an interesting perspective on how the dynamics of romantic attraction work in their own lives. A discussion will follow the film.

For questions or directions, contact Karen at

Women's Gathering

Several women in Love+Politics have talked about meeting just as WOMEN involved with the group, with polyamory, with sex- positive/queer positive and progressive politics. We invite any interested women to meet for an informal gathering on Tuesday, July 13th, at 7 PM, same location as the Writing & Vision group. Therefore, please call Abra at (510) 594-1987 or e-mail aquinn@speakeasy.net for directions.

The meeting will be in Oakland, accessible by MacArthur BART. So far, there is no child care, and it is not particularly accessible -- a long ramp, yes, but at least six big steps. Bring any ideas you have for discussion, from women and poly practice, to body image, to bi identity, to group functioning, to specifically women's activism or the nature of feminism. WHATEVER you would like to discuss.

Writing & Vision Meeting

The next Writing & Vision group meeting will be one week later than usual, on Thursday evening at 7 PM, July 15th. It will meet in Oakland, near the
MacArthur BART. For specific directions, please e-mail aquinn@speakeasy.net or call (510) 594-1987.

Poly Beach Party

On Saturday, July 17 starting at 2pm, there will be a party at Pepper's house, which is just across the street from Ocean Beach.

We will have a BBQ and grill session during the afternoon, just hanging around (in or out of the hot tub), drinking, and listening to music. In the evening, we will have a short celebration for Jen's birthday (Happy Birthday Jen!) and then the party will mutate into a massage party. Later we will move to the beach and have a bonfire if the spirit moves us.

Though will be no formal childcare at this event, the house is kid-friendly, complete with various indoor and outdoor play spaces and crash spaces. There will be nudity both in the hot tub and during the massage portion of the party. Any sexual expression during the massage portion will be confined to a single room.

The enclosed front yard of the house and downstairs are both accessible by wheelchair (one step for the downstairs). The back deck is up four steps, and there are a number of steps to the top floor. Most of the party action will be outside and downstairs.

Love+Politics April potluck & general meting
The Love+Politics main meeting this month will be meeting at 615 Woodmont Avenue (in the Oakland hills) on Saturday, April 24. Potluck from 6:00 to 7:00, meeting 7:00 to 9:30, _sharp_, so please try to get there before 7:00. Directions are below. This location is not very accessible by public transit, so we will be doing some car-pooling for those that need it. Co-ordinators are:
Oakland: Justin sonicjro5@yahoo.com
Berkeley: Crow 510 486 8141
San Francisco: Gerard gerardp@speakeasy.org

This is a new space for us, belonging to the parent of one of our members. It is a private home, but she is trying to start a small business renting the space out to various groups, so we will be passing the hat for a contribution, and we also want to be sure to leave the space spic & span. Handicap accessibility: Moderate (one step up, standard bathroom).

Note that we are still looking for a place to meet in the City that will hold the full potluck as well.

The agenda for this meeting has 4 parts:
1. Brief reports back from the Action Groups, including requests for help.
2. Massage (optional) & personal sharing
3. Code of ethics and membership policy discussion
4. Brainstorm & planning of future potlucks.

One of our goals for this meeting is to scope out ideas for future meetings. We expect that we will soon begin having a theme for each meeting, with a presenter or leader. Some examples might include:
Using nonviolent conflict resolution techniques in relationships and in social change.
Learn to facilitate meetings.
How to throw a good sex party.
Fishbowl discussion on alternative approaches to social change.
Overcoming internal and external racism, sexism, or homophobia.
Introduction to massage techniques.
Therapeutic approaches to social change. (This could focus on human potentials, gestalt, co-counseling, or other approaches).
Building personal support networks & communities, and making L&P a better one.
Effective consensus process.
Please bring your own favorite examples of things you would like to do at the full group meeting, things you could lead, and people you know who we might be able to bring in as resources.

Directions to 615 Woodmont Avenue

615 Woodmont Avenue is a few blocks southish from the corner of Spruce and Grizzly Peak—you turn onto Woodmont Avenue just barely into the entrance to Tilden Park.

To get there from I-80, take the Albany/Buchanan exit, and go right. Eventually Buchanan becomes Marin. Aside from one little kink in the street it’s a straight shot west. You’ll hit a traffic circle, at which point you should continue up Marin in exactly the same direction you were going, in other words, from 6:00 to 12:00, exactly halfway around the circle, as if it weren’t there. It’ll be STEEP, VERY STEEP. The first stop sign facing you (after about 3-4 blocks) will be Spruce. Turn left on Spruce and drive for about five minutes, being careful to STAY on Spruce. You’ll hit a big wide intersection with a reservoir (that looks paved) on your left, and the Shepard of the Hills Lutheran Church across the street on your right. That’s where Grizzly Peak crosses Spruce. You’re still on Spruce. Do not, I repeat DO NOT TURN onto Grizzly Peak. CROSS Grizzly Peak. All the way across, that’s right! Then, almost immediately, turn a very soft, diagonal right onto Woodmont Avenue, and go about 20 houses down to 615, which is a very large house on the left.

It has a row of evergreens out front, a Tudor-style façade, and the driveway entrance is on the far right as you face the house. For group events, park on the street outside the house, as cars get parked in very quickly otherwise.

Warning: cell phones tend not to work very well up here in the hills.
